WILLIAM SAMUEL HORTON (Am. 1865-1936)

William S. Horton was an extremely talented impressionist who was little known in his time, but whose oils, pastels, watercolors and drawings are highly valued today. Horton was born in to a wealthy family in Grand Rapids, Michigan in1865. While still in his early teens, he left his academic schooling to study at the Art Institute in Chicago, and then at the Arts Students League and the National Academy of Design in New York City. He then went to Paris and studied under Benjamin Constant at the Academie Julian. It was during this time that his unique style of impressionism began to emerge. Horton used vivid colors while his peers used more muted colors. Horton first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francaises. He was very pleased when one of his paintings won a gold medal at Nantes and another received a bronze at Orleans in 1905 in provincial salons. Since, he was financially secure, Horton was never forced to sell any of his paintings. However, he always kept painting to satisfy his own sense of accomplishment. Horton died in Paris in 1936.
